Just ask me: I’m at almost 6 months pp, my supply has never been good enough, and now it’s just gone 😔
The pp journey is full of hormonal ups & downs, and it can really effect your mental health - especially where it intersects w the fraught issue of feeding one’s child...
(How can something to deeply & obviously personal be political?)
I’ve said it before but it bears repeating: Fed Is Best (acknowledging Mama’s 🤱🏽 who grieve being unable).
That said, it’s easy to feel different about yourself. We’d never treat a friend the way we do ourselves. Case in point, these are the q’s I’ve asked myself this week about moving to formula FT:
Did you try hard enough to keep supply up? Are you just being lazy?
And these are the q’s I asked myself when I realized that formula was literally making him a happy baby again (that pic ☝🏻is a post-formula smile... I mean, common):
How could you have waited this long? Did you not notice he seemed a bit lethargic?
Wow, seems like we can never win in this culture of Mom shame 🤷🏼♀️
Stir that up w very real hormonal ups & downs, and it’s easy to see how fragile mental health can be during this time - even for those who may never experience issues outside of pp.
So I’m telling you as much as myself:
💖 Be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can for your babies and you’re literally THE BEST Mama they could ask for.
👩❤️💋👩 Lean into friends, esp ones who have been there. I’m so grateful to the formula Mamas who have shared their feelings - & formula hacks - w me this week.
👩🏽⚕️Don’t be afraid to seek professional help. We often tell ourselves that things “aren’t that bad” and that we don’t “deserve” to “make a big deal” out of things that are, in fact, BIG FUCKING DEALS!
📚 And, the founding concept of #OneToughMother, knowledge is empowering. I hope that understanding the reality of your hormone fluctuations - it goes far beyond week or month one - will help you not only give yourself a break (🙋🏼♀️ I’m working on that too) but seek the care you need.
